How to Check Income Tax Refund Status Online in 2025

After filing your income tax return and claiming a refund, the natural question is – when will I receive my refund? The income tax department has made it easy to track your refund status online. This guide covers all the methods to check your refund status.

How Long Does a Refund Take?

Typically, income tax refunds are processed within 20 to 45 days after the return is e-verified. However, the timeline can vary depending on:

  • Whether the return is selected for processing or detailed scrutiny
  • The accuracy of bank account details provided in the return
  • Outstanding tax demands from previous years
  • Volume of returns being processed by the CPC (Centralized Processing Centre)

Method 1: Check Refund Status on Income Tax Portal

  1. Visit incometax.gov.in and log in with your PAN and password
  2. Navigate to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns
  3. Find the relevant assessment year and click on View Details
  4. Look for the refund status which will show one of these states:
  • Refund Issued – Refund has been processed and sent to your bank
  • Refund Determined – CPC has determined a refund but it has not been sent yet
  • Not Determined – Return is still being processed
  • Refund Adjusted – Refund has been adjusted against outstanding tax demands
  • Refund Failed – Refund could not be credited due to bank account issues

Method 2: Check on NSDL/TIN Website

  1. Visit tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/refund-status
  2. Enter your PAN number
  3. Select the Assessment Year
  4. Enter the captcha code and click Submit

The NSDL website shows the refund status along with the mode of payment (NECS/NEFT/direct credit), date of refund, and the bank to which the refund was sent.

Method 3: Check via SMS

You will receive SMS notifications on your registered mobile number when your refund is processed. These are sent automatically by the CPC, Bengaluru.

What If Your Refund is Delayed?

If your refund has not been received within 60 days of e-verification:

  • Check if the return status shows any defect or processing error
  • Verify that the bank account mentioned in the return is pre-validated
  • Ensure your PAN is linked with Aadhaar – refunds are not processed without linkage
  • Check for any outstanding demand from previous years that may offset the refund
  • If none of the above, raise a grievance on the e-filing portal under Grievance > Submit Grievance

Refund Failed – How to Get It Re-Issued

If your refund failed due to incorrect bank details:

  1. Log in to the income tax portal
  2. Go to Service Request > Request for Refund Re-issue
  3. Select the assessment year and reason for re-issue
  4. Enter the correct pre-validated bank account details
  5. Submit the request

The refund will be re-processed and credited to the updated bank account within 2-3 weeks.

Interest on Refund

Under Section 244A, if the refund amount exceeds 10% of the tax payable, you are entitled to simple interest at 0.5% per month from the 1st of April of the assessment year to the date of grant of refund (for returns filed on time). This interest is taxable in the year it is received.
